What is Houston Improvement Project (HIP)?
HIP supports the Houston inner city by renovating community spaces, classrooms, performance spaces, gardens and more that give kids, adults and seniors a place to thrive, grow and learn. HIP selects one community partner a year in an open application process. The winning applicant will get the opportunity to have a space of their choosing renovated in a project valued up to $50,000.
When does the application open?
The 2018 application has closed. Our 2019 application will be available soon! :)
Who is qualified to apply?
You must be a nonprofit organization that owns a space within the Houston city limits.
What type of space can be renovated or improved?
This space is not limited to: classrooms, gardens, playgrounds, multi-use space, computer labs, libraries, and theaters.
Span of project could include: Painting walls, installing new floors, installing lighting fixtures, ceiling tiles, mural or art installation, new theater space, creative aging art space, installation of new books/computers/smart boards/desks and chairs/furniture, building gardens, improving playgrounds of all ages. Think it, we can try to do it! We love creative ideas!
At this time, we do projects that are considered cosmetic, i.e. - we do not do jobs that need to pull permits with the City of Houston.
During the renovation process, if major damage is found in the space (water/termite/mold/fire/wear and tear, etc.), it is the responsibility of the nonprofit to investigate and repair these areas.
What can't the project include?
This project can not include kitchens, bathrooms, swimming pools, animal facilities and outdoor sports facilities. This is also cannot be a rebuild of a completely or nearly demolished space or a empty or abandoned lot, field, building or space. Proposals requesting these facilities will automatically be disqualified.
We are also not a custodial service - we are not here to clean, we're here to make large, long lasting change to your space!
Who does what work?
HIP hires professional and insured contractors to do any professional work such as tile, ceiling or flooring and minor electrical work. Our volunteers help out with managing the overall project, designing the concept, panting, installing furniture and furnishings, etc.
When would this project take place?
We will work with your organization’s schedule to get this project done. Our 2017 project lasted through April-November, with planning/fundraising from April-August and volunteer/contractor days throughout September-November.
Do you give cash grants?
No, all of our dedicated funds go towards the renovation project. We cannot cut a check like a foundation or donor would.
